St. Augustine's Sermon on Ascension

May 29, 2025The Catholic Church is truly blessed: The Holy Spirit, on May 8, has just chosen for the first time ever an AMERICAN and AUGUSTINIAN priest as our Pope: Leo XIV! Let us also PRAISE the HOLY SPIRIT and REJOICE as we are now entering the last 8 days of the Easter Season: FROM ASCENSION this Sunday June 1st TO PENTECOST next Sunday June 8.
St AUGUSTINE is by far my favorite writer of the early Church. I will never forget our Professor of Liturgy at Pope St John Seminary in Boston, a Norbertian religious priest, telling our first-year class of seminarians; “when you pray daily the Office of Readings in the Breviary, pay special attention whenever you have a reading taken from the writings of St AUGUSTINE “. Since then, Fall of 2005, I have done so: already a total of 20 years. St Augustine’s writings are often selected in the daily Office of Readings, which most priests pray at the beginning of every day. His writings are always clear, insightful, spiritual and inspirational. He was truly guided by the Holy Spirit!
A perfect example is an excerpt from one of St Augustine’s sermon on the ASCENCION OF OUR LORD, which every year all priests throughout the entire world, including the Pope , read in the morning of the Ascension Solemnity “No one has ever ascended into heaven except the one who de- scended from heaven.”
The opening sentence of this amazing sermon is :”Today our Lord Jesus Christ ascended into heaven; let our hearts ascend with him”...Then St Augustine completes the opening paragraph :”Just as Jesus remained with us after his ascension, so we too are already in heaven with him, even though what is promised us has not yet been fulfilled in our bodies”.
What a powerful beginning! Do you believe that while on earth we can already be with Jesus in heaven? I do. More and more I say to people asking for spiritual help: “Heaven begins on earth. Our souls never die. Our souls have only one life: one from our birth to eternal life in heaven. It is a continuum. To be in heaven is to be with Our Lord Jesus Christ. Whenever we receive Jesus Christ, God, in the Eucharist we are truly in heaven. We are with God. Whenever we see the face of Christ in people we help for the Glory of God, we are also in Heaven. Whenever we feel the Presence of Jesus Christ in our lives, we are with God in Heaven. Trust in Jesus Christ! These brief moments with God on earth are followed by long moments of living in the world: Purgatory, or even Hell, separation from the Love of God. The good news is that for all of us sinners, while on earth, Jesus gave us the Sacrament of Reconciliation, which is also a moment in Heaven, as the priest represents Jesus at the very moment of absolution of sins. God is soo good. He is a God of Love and Mercy. We also have to remember that once our bodies die, there is no second chance for turning to God for Reconciliation. Jesus Christ then is the one to judge us...”
St Augustine continues: “Jesus did not leave heaven when he came down to us; nor did he withdraw from us when he went up again in heaven. The fact that he was in heaven while he was on earth is borne by his own statement: No one has ever ascended into heaven except the one who descended from heaven, the Son of Man , who is in heaven, These words are expressed by our own oneness with Christ, for he is our head as we are his body...St Paul says: Just as he human body , which has many members, is a unity, because all the different members make one body, so it is also with Christ, He too has many members, but one body.
St Augustine concludes : “Out of compassion for us Christ descended from heaven, and although he ascended alone, we also ascend because we are in him by grace. Thus, no one but Christ descended and, no one but Christ ascended; not because there is no distinction between the head and the body; but because the body as a unity cannot be separated from the head.”
Following Jesus’ Ascension to Heaven, let us pray together to receive the Holy Spirit at Pentecost:
Come Holy Spirit! Open our hearts to desire to be with God at all times. Come Holy Spirit! Help us to find the Presence of God while on earth! Come Holy Spirit! Help us to enter into Heaven while on earth, even if only for a few short moments! Come Holy Spirit! Guide our steps on earth so that when our bodies die, our souls will continue their journey to be with God in Heaven for ever and ever! AMEN!

EL SERMON DE SAN AGUSTIN EN LA ASCENSIÓNLa Iglesia Católicas es realmente bendita: El 8 de Mayo el Espíritu Santo, ha escogido por primera vez un sacerdote AMERICANO y de la Orden de los AGUSTI- NOS como nuestro Papa: Leo XIV ! También ALABEMOS al ESPÍRITU SANTO y ALEGRÉMONOS ahora que estamos empezando los ultimos 8 dias de el Tiempo de Pascua: Desde la ASCENSIÓN este Domingo 1 de Junio hasta PENTECOSTÉS el próximo Domingo 8 de junio.
St AGUSTIN ha sido mi escritor favorito de la Iglesia antigua.Nunca olvidare a nuestro Profesor de Liturgia en el Seminario St Juan en Boston, un sacerdote religioso de la orden Norbertina, diciéndole a nuestra clase de primer año de seminaristas; “cuando ustedes oren diariamente las Lecturas de los Oficios del Breviario, pongan atención especial de donde quiera que tengan la Lectura de los escritos de San AGUSTIN“. Desde entonces, Otoño del 2005, así lo he hecho: ya un total de 20 años. Los escritos de San Agustin son frecuentemente seleccionados en las Lecturas de los Oficios diarios, los cuales leen muchos sacerdotes al inicio de cada día. Sus escritos son siempre claros, profundos, espirituales e inspiradores. ¡Él realmente era guiado por el Espíritu Santo!
La oración de apertura de este maravilloso sermón es: ”Hoy nuestro Señor Jesucristo ascendió al cielo; que nuestros corazones asciendan con El”...entonces San Agustin completo el parrafo de apertura:”Así como Jesús permanece con nosotros después de su ascensión, así también nosotros ya estamos con él en el cielo,incluso que nos prometió no se ha cumplido en nuestros cuerpos”.
¡Poderoso principio! ¿Usted cree que mientras estemos en la tierra podemos estar ya con Jesús en el cielo? Yo sí lo creo. Le digo una y otra vez a la gente que pide ayuda espiritual: “El Cielo empieza en la tierra. Nuestras almas nunca mueren. Nuestras almas solamente tienen una vida: una desde nuestro nacimiento hasta la vida eterna en el cielo. Es una continuacion. Estar en el cielo es estar con Nuestro Senor Jesucristo. Todas las veces que recibimos a Jesucristo, Dios, en la Eucaristía estamos verdaderamente en el cielo. Estamos con Dios. Cada vez que vemos la cara de Cristo en la gente que ayudamos para la Gloria de Dios, estamos también en el Cielo. Cada vez que sentimos la Presencia de Jesu- cristo en nuestras vidas, estamos con Dios en el Cielo.
Confien en Jesucristo! Estos momentos breves con Dios en la tierra son seguidos por largos momentos de vida en el mundo: Purgatorio, o incluso Infierno, la separacion del amor de Dios. Las buenas noticias es que para todos nosotros los pecadores, mientras estemos en la tierra, Jesus nos dio el Sacramento de la Reconciliación, el cual es también un momento en el Cielo, así como el sacerdote representa a Jesus en cadaminuto de la absolución de los pecados. Dios es tan bueno. Él es un Dios de Amor y Misericordia. También tenemos que recordar que una vez que nuestros cuerpos mueren, no hay segunda oportunidad de volver a Dios a través de la Reconciliación. Es entonces Jesucristo que nos juzga...”
San Agustin continua: “Jesus no dejo el cielo cuando bajo con nosotros; ni se apartó de nosostros cuando regreso de nuevo al Cielo. El hecho de que él estaba en el Cielo mientras que estaba en la tierra fue llevado por su propia declaración: Nadie ha ascendido al cielo con excepción de quien descendió del cielo, el Hijo del Hombre , quien está en el cielo, Estas palabras son expresadas por nuestra propia unicidad con Cristo, porque él es la cabeza y nosotros somos su cuerpo...lo dijo San Pablo: Así como el cuerpo humano , el cual tiene muchos miembros , es una unidad, porque todos los miembros diferentes hacen un solo cuerpo, así también con Cristo. Él también tiene muchos miembros, pero solo es un cuerpo.
San Agustin concluye: “Por compasión hacia nosotros Cristo descendió del Cielo, y ascendió solo, así también nosotros ascendemos porque estamos en él por su gracia. Asi, ninguno sino solo Cristo descendió y ascendió, no porque haya alguna diferencia entre la cabeza y el cuerpo, sino porque el cuerpo como una unidad no puede ser separado de la cabeza”
Siguiendo la Ascencion de Jesus al cielo, oremos juntos para recibir al Espíritu Santo en Pentecostés:
¡Ven Espiritu Santo! Abre nuestros corazones al deseo de querer estar siempre con Dios. ¡Ven Espíritu Santo! ayúdanos a encontrar la Presencia de Dios mientras estamos en la tierra! ¡Ven Espíritu Santo! Ayúdanos a entrar al Cielo mientras estamos en la tierra, incluso si son unos pocos momentos! Ven Espiritu Santo! Guia nuestros pasos en la tierra para que cuando nuestros cuerpos mueran, nuestras almas continúen su camino para estar con Dios en el Cielo por siempre y para siempre! ¡AMEN!
Que Dios nos conceda a todos nosostros la mejor de todas las Celebraciones de Pentecostes! Demole todos también una bienvenida al Obispo Juan Esposito cuando esté con nosotros en la Misa de las 11:30 am el 8 de Junio DOMINGO DE PENTECOSTÉS!
