Make Your Home Another Nazareth

December 26, 2024“My prayer for you is that you make your home another Nazareth where Jesus can abide always with you. Let us pray - God bless you”. This is the way Mother Teresa of Calcutta ended the 4-page letter she wrote to me and my family after our meeting her personally in Calcutta during the Summer of 1978. I have cherished her letter for over 45 years! Her ending was a true blessing. I knew that I had met a living saint. I was then 33-year-old and a member of the World Bank Mission in Dacca, Bangladesh. I am grateful to God to have had the opportunity to meet one of the greatest saints of our time. I am grateful to have received such a powerful blessing from Mother Teresa.
For the last 14 years my home has been Our Lady Help of Christians Catholic Church. Our parish is a family of families. As your pastor, I am grateful to God to have you as my own family and my home. You call me father. You are a Gift to me. You have brought to me so much Joy. Why am I writing to you about Mother Teresa and our parish family just after we celebrated the Joy of Christmas? This Sunday we celebrate the Feast of the Holy Family of Jesus, Mary and Joseph. It is always the Sunday within the Octave of Christmas. We have rejoiced at the Nativity of our Lord Jesus in Bethlehem. We have come to adore the babe born in a humble manger where Mary and Joseph were lodging...The Church now wants us to reflect on the holiest family where Jesus spent the first 30 years of his life.
Today's Gospel (Luke 2:41-52) records that after three days Joseph and Mary found Jesus in the temple sitting in the midst of teachers. His parents were astounded. Jesus asserts that his parents should not have worried: “Did you not know that I must be in my Father's house?" This is the first time that the twelve-year-old Jesus reveals himself as the Son of God...Then Jesus goes back with his parents to Nazareth: "He was obedient to them; and his mother kept all these things in her heart. And Jesus advanced in wisdom and age and favor before God and man” (Luke 2:52). Saint Paul VI was the first Pope that went on pilgrimage to the Holy Land and in his historic address in Nazareth on January 5, 1964, he spoke about Nazareth as a model for all of us. First, he refers to the beauty of the silence of Nazareth that should teach us on how to meditate in peace and quiet, to reflect on the deeply spiritual, and to be open to the voice of God's inner wisdom. Second, we can learn about family life: "May Nazareth serve as a model of what the family should be. May it show us the family's holy and enduring characters and exemplify its basic function in society ...in sum the perfect setting for rearing children”.
Today the family is under attack. More than ever, we need to ask God to protect our families and keep them in love and unity. Mary and Joseph are the perfect example of parents. God gave them all the virtues needed for parenthood. They were truly blessed to have Jesus as their child: the Son of God was with them! Can a family imitate the Holy Family of Mary, Joseph and Jesus? It's impossible! But God can make the impossible possible. May Mother Teresa prayer resonate in the hearts of our families, especially when worshipping together in our Church: "MAY YOU MAKE YOUR HOME ANOTHER NAZARETH WHERE JESUS CAN ABIDE ALWAYS WITH YOU!" Let's remember this prayer when we receive the Body and Blood of Our Lord Jesus at Mass!
May we all be inspired by the love, obedience and humility of our dear mother Mary in Heaven as we celebrate on January 1st the Solemnity of MARY, MOTHER OF GOD! It's a Holy Day of Obligation: a wonderful way to enter into the New Year 2025, the JUBILEE YEAR OF HOPE. May God help all of us to be PILGRIMS OF HOPE in 2025!

CONVIERTA SU HOGAR EN OTRO NAZARETHMi oración para usted es que convierta su hogar en otro Nazaret donde Jesús permanezca siempre a su lado. Oremos - Dios lo bendiga “. Esta es la manera en que Madre Teresa de Calcutta finalizó la carta de 4- páginas que escribió para mi y mi familia después de la reunión que tuvimos personalmente en Calcuta durante el verano de 1978. He apreciado esta carta por más de 45 años! La manera en que finalizó la carta fue realmente una bendición. Sabia que habia conocido a un santo en vida. En ese entonces yo tenía 33 años de edad y era miembro del Banco Mundial en Dacca, Bangladesh. Estoy agradecido con Dios por haber tenido la oportunidad de conocer a una de las grandes santas de nuestro tiempo. Muy agradecido por haber recibido tan poderosa bendición de la Madre Teresa.
Por los últimos 14 años mi hogar ha sido la Iglesia Católica Maria Auxiliadora. Nuestra parroquia es una familia de familias. Como su pastor, estoy agradecido con Dios de tenerlos como mi propia familia y mi hogar. Me llaman Padre. Ustedes son un Regalo para mi. Me han dado mucha Alegria. Ahora, se preguntaran porque estoy escribiendoles sobre la Madre Teresa y nuestra familia parroquial después de haber celebrado la Alegría de Navidad. Este Domingo celebramos la Festividad de la Sagrada Familia de Jesus, Maria Jose. Siempre es el Domingo dentro de la Octava Navidad. Se ajusta a este tiempo. Nos hemos regocijado en el Nacimiento del Señor Jesus en Belen. Hemos venido a adorar al recién nacido en el humilde pesebre donde Maria y Jose se estaban hospedando...La Iglesia ahora quiere que reflexionemos sobre la sagrada familia donde Jesús pasó los primeros 30 años de su
vida.
El Evangelio de hoy (Lucas 2:41-52) registra a Jose y Maria encontrando a Jesus en el templo. Jesus asegura a sus padres que no deben preocuparse: “¿No saben que debo estar en la casa de mi Padre?" Después Jesús regresó con sus padres a Nazaret: "Él fue obediente a ellos; y su madre mantenía todo en su corazón. Y Jesus crecía en sabiduría y edad y en gracia delante de los hombres" (Lucas 2:52). San Pablo VI fue el primer papa que fue al Peregrinaje a Tierra Santa y en su dirección histórica en Nazaret el 5 de enero de 1964, habló sobre Nazaret como modelo para todos. Primero, se refiere a la belleza del silencio de Nazaret que nos enseña a meditar en paz y silencio, para poder reflejar en una profunda espiritualidad, y estar abierto a la voz interna de Dios. Segundo, podemos aprender de la vida familiar: " Que Nazaret nos sirva como modelo de qué familia debe de ser. Que nos muestre la santidad de la familia y fortalezca nuestro carácter y ejemplos en las funciones básicas en la sociedad: una comunidad de amor y compartimiento, la belleza de los problemas que tienen y las recompensas que traen; en resumen es el lugar perfecto para una crianza ajustada para los niños”. Hoy la familia está siendo atacada. Más que antes, necesitamos pedir a Dios que proteja a nuestras familias y mantenerlos en amor y unidad. Maria y Jose son los padres ejemplares. Dios les concedió todas las virtudes necesarias para su paternidad. Fueron realmente bendecidos de tener a Jesus como su hijo: el Hijo de Dios estaba con ellos! Puede alguna familia imitar a la Sagrada Familia de Maria, Jose y Jesus? Es imposible! Pero Dios puede hacer lo imposible posible. Que la Oración de Madre Teresa resuene en los corazones de nuestras familias, especialmente cuando estamos dando gloria a Dios juntos en la iglesia: "QUE PUEDA CONVERTIR SU HOGAR EN OTRO NAZARET DONDE JESÚS PERMANEZCA SIEMPRE CON USTEDES!" Recordemos esta oración cuando recibamos el Cuerpo y la Sangre de Nuestro Señor Jesucristo en la Misa!
Que todos seamos inspirados por el amor, la obediencia y la humildad de nuestra querida madre Maria en el cielo cuando celebremos el 1 de enero la Solemnidad de MARÍA, MADRE DE DIOS! Es un día de Obligación: una maravillosa forma de entrar en el Año Nuevo 2025, el AÑO JUBILAR DE LA ESPERANZA. Que Dios nos ayude a todos a ser PEREGRINOS DE LA ESPERANZA en 2025!
