Habemus Papam: Pope Leo XIV

May 16, 2025I am writing this column from Rome just to let you know that the twenty-seven pilgrims of our parish who went to Italy in this Jubilee Year of Hope 2025 are all well. You will hear their witness talk upon their return.
Our pilgrimage planned six months ago coincided with the recent Conclave and we had the opportunity to see our new Pope Leo XIV in St Peter’s Square yesterday for his first Angelus address! It was an inspiring, memorable moment. On May 8, the white smoke had emerged from the Sistine Chapel and the entire world could hear those Latin words proclaimed: HABEMUS PAPAM ROBERTUM FRANCISCUM PREVOST qui sibi nomen imposuit LEONEM XIV”. Translation “WE HAVE A POPE ROBERT FRANCIS PREVOST who has chosen the name LEO XIV. Almost nobody knew who Cardinal Robert Prevost was. What a surprise!!!
We also went through the Holy Door of St Peter’s Basilica today. This is the Jubilee Holy Door which Pope Francis opened on December 8, 2024, Feast Day of the Immaculate Conception. This was one of the goals of our Jubilee Pilgrimage. What a blessing ! You will hear witness talks, and I will also write to you more about our amazing pilgrimage when we return to Waldorf on Saturday.
Below are my written answers to questions sent to me in Rome from El Pregonero (Catholic Standard). They needed an immediate response by email. Here it is:
“These are my preliminary thoughts about our new Pope. I think that the election of Pope Leo XIV is “good news” for the Catholic Church. I have been in Italy with twenty-seven pilgrims of Hope from our Parish. We landed in Milan the same day the Conclave opened (Wednesday May 7) .When we planned this Jubilee 2025 Pilgrimage for our parish 6 months ago, we decided to focus the first two days on St John Bosco and Our Lady Help of Christians which Don Bosco promoted as one of the two pillars of the Catholic Church, the other one being the Eucharist.”
Our first Mass was for the Conclave and our prayer was that the 135 Cardinals Electors will be inspired by the Holy Spirit and agree on the one Cardinal favored by the Holy Spirit to become our New Shepherd. On our way by bus to Bologna the next day May 8 (Victory Day 1945) we were shocked to learn that the third vote led to “white smoke”. So Quick! Another shock was the election of Cardinal Robert Prevost, born in Chicago, the first American Pope!!! The only knowledge I had of the new Pope was that he had replaced Cardinal Ouellet of Canada as the Head of Dicastery supervising all Bishops and recommendingnew ones to the Pope for appointment. WHAT DO I THINK OF THE NEW POPE? Based on my limited knowledge of who he is, but inspired by seeing him today at the noon Angelus in St Peter’s Square, receiving His blessing, and rejoicing with over 100,000 people to see a humble, holy, joyful and inspirational New Pope. I believe he will build on the achievements of Pope Francis assisting/evangelizing the poor and those at the margin of the society, including the immigrants, and also praying for an end to all wars. At the same time, I believe our new Pope will focus on promoting and maintaining the Unity of the entire Catholic Church. His experience of 20 years as missionary in Peru and over 10 years as Prior General of the Augustine Religious Order are most valuable at this critical moment in the History of the Catholic Church. As a priority he may focus on renewed evangelization, promoting vocations to the priesthood, centrality of the Eucharist and also encouraging youth and young adults to be more involved in Church activities.
Let us pray for Pope Leo XIV as he will be installed solemnly as the 267th Pope this Sunday May 18, when we will celebrate our annual Parish Feast Day with the Crowning of Mary and Youth Outdoor Mass. Happy Feast Day to all of you!
Let us pray that as our New Shepherd Leo XIV will be the Pope the Holy Spirit has chosen to guide the steps of our Church for the next few years!

HABEMUS PAPAM: LEO XIVEstoy escribiendo esta columna desde Roma para decirles que los veintisiete peregrinos de nuestra parroquia quienes vinieron a Italia en este Año Jubilar de la Esperanza 2025 estamos bien. Escuchará sus testimonios cuando regresen. Nuestro Peregrinaje planeado seis meses antes, coincide con el Cónclave reciente y tuvimos la oportunidad de ver a nuestro nuevo Papa Leo XIV en la Plaza de San Pedro ayer para decir su primer Ángelus! Fue un momento inspirador y memorable. El 8 de Mayo, el humo blanco que salió de la Capilla Sixtina y el mundo entero pudo escuhar esas palabras en Latín: « HABEMUS PAPAM ROBERTUM FRANCISCUM PREVOST qui sibi nomen imposuit LEONEM XIV”. “TENEMOS PAPA ROBERT FRANCIS PREVOST quien ha escogido el nombre de LEO XIV. Casi nadie conoce quién es el Cardenal Robert Prevost. Que sorpresa!!!
También pasamos por la Puerta Santa de la Basílica en San Pedro hoy. Esta es la Puerta Santa del Jubileo que el Papa Francisco abrió el 8 de diciembre de 2024, la Fiesta de la Inmaculada Concepción. Esta era una de nuestras metas para este Peregrinaje Jubilar. Que bendicion! Ustedes escucharán testimonios, y también les escribiré más acerca de este maravilloso peregrinaje cuando regresemos a Waldorf el Sábado.
Abajo están mis respuestas escritas a las preguntas que me envió a Roma El Pregonero (Catholic Standard). Ellos necesitan una respuesta inmediata por correo electrónico. Aquí están:
“Estos son mis pensamientos preliminares acerca del nuevo Papa. Pienso que la elección del Papa Leo XIV son “buenas noticias” para la Iglesia Católica. He estado en Italia con veintisiete peregrinos de la Esperanza de nuestra parroquia. Aterrizamos en Milán el mismo dia que empezó el Cónclave (Miércoles 7 de Mayo) . Cuando planeamos este Peregrinaje Jubilar 2025 para nuestra Parroquia hace 6 meses, decidimos enfocarnos los primeros dos días en San Juan Bosco y en nuestrs Señora Maria Auxiliadora la cual Don Bosco promovió como un de los pilares de la Iglesia católica, el otro pilar es la Eucaristía.”
Nuestra primera Misa por el Cónclave y nuestras oraciones fueron para los 135 Cardenales Electores estuvieran inspirados por el Espíritu Santo y que estuvieran de acuerdo con el Cardenal favorecido por el Espíritu Santo para convertirse en nuestro Nuevo Pastor. De camino por bus hacia Bologna al dia siguiente 8 de Mayo (dia de la Victoria en 1945)nos impresiona saber que al tercer voto los llevo al “humo blanco”. Que Rapido! Otra impresion fue la eleccion del Cardenal Robert Prevost, nacido en Chicago,el primer Papa Americano!!! El único conocimiento que tenía del nuevo Papa era que él sustituyó al Cardenal Ouellet de Canadá como el Jefe del Dicasterio el cual supervisa a todos los Obispos y recomienda nuevos para ser nombrados por el Papa. QUE PIENSO DEL NUEVO PAPA? En base a mi conocimiento limitado de quien es el, pero inspirado al verlo hoy al mediodía durante el canto del Ángelus en la Plaza San Pedro, recibiendo sus bendiciones, y alegrándonos con más de 100,000 personas al ver al nuevo Papa tan humilde, santo e inspirador. Creo que él construirá sobre los logros del Papa Francisco en asistir y evangelizar a los pobres y a los marginados de la sociedad, incluyendo a los inmigrantes, y también rezando para que terminen todas las guerras. Al mismo tiempo, creo que nuestro nuevo Papa se enfocará en promover y mantener la Unidad de toda la Iglesia Católica. Su experiencia de 20 años como misionero en Perú y más de 10 años como Prior General de la Orden religiosa de los Augustinos son muy valiosos en este tiempo tan crítico en la Historia de la Iglesia Católica. Como prioridad se puede enfocar en renovar la evangelización, promover las vocaciones al sacerdocio, concentrándose en la Eucaristía y también animando a los jóvenes y adultos jóvenes a involucrarse más en las actividades de la Iglesia.
Oremos por el Papa Leo XIV cuando sea solemnemente nombrado como el Papa 267 este Domingo 18 de Mayo, cuando celebramos nuestra Fiesta Patronal con la Coronación de María y una Misa al aire libre con los jóvenes. ¡Feliz Fiesta Patronal para todos ustedes!
Oremos para que nuestro nuevo Pastor Leo XIV sea un Papa que el Espíritu Santo ha escogido para guiar los pasos de la Iglesia por los próximos años!
