God Is Generous

September 21, 2023Are you envious because God is generous with everyone at all times? This is the question God asks all of us at end of this weekend’s Gospel: the parable of the Landowner hiring laborer for his Vineyard (Matthew 20:1- 16a). Envy, jealously are "human" emotions. Our main relationship ought to be with God, not with other human beings. Our main goal is to be at Peace with God while on earth in order to have eternal life with God in heaven.
In the Parable of the Landowner of the Vineyard, we know the Landowner is God, the triune God: Father, Son and Holy Spirit. The laborers hired for His Vineyard are all of us, the People of God. The Vineyard is the place where God has planted His Vine. Jesus, Son of God is the Vine, and we are the branches (John 15), producing fruits for the Landowner: God. How can we apply this Parable to our own parish, the local church?
One could say our landowner is Bishop Cardinal Gregory, and the OLHOC Pastor is the foreman acting on behalf of the Bishop. The Vineyard is our entire parish territory (half of the greater Waldorf area). The Vine is Our Lord Jesus Christ. The hired laborers are all our parishioners, the branches are the Vine, fed by Our Lord Jesus Christ, and producing fruits for our landowner, the Bishop representing Jesus as the head of the local Church.
The key questions for each one of us, including myself, are: What is my role in our local vineyard of Waldorf? What is my purpose? Am I fulfilling God’s Will to love Him and everyone (including my enemies) for His glory? Or, am I pursuing my own will, my own self-centered interests (prestige, power, control, money)? Am I jealous/envious of others when they are successful?
It is very difficult to discern God’s will. We are blinded by our human passions and desires. We know we are doing God’s Will when our hearts are at peace! We need prayers and frequent receipt of the Sacraments of Eucharist and Penance. We need to let go of our grudges. We need to forgive everyone. As Jesus said last week, we need to forgive 77 times those who sin against us. We need to be as generous as God is, who forgives all our sins! As we hear in today’s First Reading (Isaiah 55:6-9): “Call the Lord when He is near. Let the wicked turn to the Lord for mercy, to our God Who is generous in forgiving.”Last question: Is the Lord calling you to a new assignment in His vineyard? Perhaps to be a Consecrated Virgin, a Nun, a Monk, a Permanent Deacon, a Priest, a Catechist, a Eucharistic Minister to the Homebound, a member of our Outreach Committee, a Lector, an Usher, a Greeter, a Sacristan, and Altar Boy, a singer in our St. Cecelia Choir for Girls, an Altar Guild member, a Building Committee member, or a volunteer to help us redesign our IT systems (phones, computers, websites)? The psalmist summarizes the generosity of our God and His continued presence in our lives through His never-ending love. We only have to do one thing—ask God for help. “The Lord is near to all who call upon him, to all who call him in truth.” (Psalm 145:18)
Let us pray: All-Generous, All-Merciful, Ever- Present God, Help us to call upon You and to understand what you want us to do in Your Vineyard!

DIOS ES GENEROSOLe da envidia que Dios sea generoso con todos siempre? Esta es la pregunta que Dios nos hace en el Evangelio de este fin de semana: La Parabola del Dueño contratando trabajadores para su vina (Mateo 20:1-16a). La envidia, y los celos son emociones “humanas”. Nuestra principal relacion debe ser con Dios, no con otros seres humanos. Nuestra meta principal es estar en Paz con Dios mientras estamos en la tierra para asi tener vida eterna en el Cielo con Dios.
En la Parabola del Dueño de la Viña, sabemos que el Dueño es Dios, trino: Padre. Hijo y Espiritu Santo. Los trabajadores contratados para hacer Su trabajo en la Viña, somos nosotros, el pueblo de Dios. La Viña es el lugar donde Dios ha plantado su Vid, Jesus, el Hijo de Dios es la Vid, y nosotros somos las ramas ( Juan 15) produciendo frutos para el Dueño: Dios. Como podemos aplicar esta Parabola a nuestra propia Parroquia, la Iglesia local?
Podria decirse que el Dueño es el Cardenal Gregory, y que el Pastor de Maria Auxiliadora es el Encargado Jefe que actua en nombre del Obispo. La Viña es todo el territorio de la Parroquia (el cual es la mitad de la gran area de Waldorf). La Vid es el Señor Jesucristo. Los trabajadores contratados son todos nuestros parroquianos, las ramas de la Vid, alimentadas por el Señor Jesucristo, y produciendo frutos para nuestro Dueño, el Obispo representa a Jesus como la cabeza de la Iglesia local.
La pregunta clave para nosotros , incluyendome, es: Cual es mi puesto en la viña local de Waldorf? Cual es mi proposito? Estoy cumpliendo la voluntad de Dios de amarlo y a los demas (incluyendo a mis enemigos) para Su gloria? O, estoy buscando mi propia voluntad, mis propios intereses egoistas (de prestigio, poder, control, o dinero)? Estoy celoso o envidiando cuando otros tienen exito? Es muy dificil entender la voluntad de Dios. Estamos cegados por nuestras pasiones y deseos humanos. Sabemos que estamos haciendo la Voluntad de Dios cuando nuestro corazon esta en paz! Necesitamos orar y recibir el Sacramento de Reconciliacion y Eucaristia con mayor frecuencia. Necesitamos deshacernos de nuestros rencores. Necesitamos perdonar a todos. Como dijo Jesus la semana pasada, Necesitamos perdonar 77 veces a quien a pecado contra nosotros. Necesitamos ser generosos como Dios, quien perdona todos nuestros pecados! Como escuchamos hoy en la Primera Lectura (Isaias 55:6-9): “Buscad a Dios mientras este cerca. Que los malvados vuelan a Dios por su misericordia, quien es generoso en perdonar”.
Nuestra ultima pregunta: El Señor esta llamandote para un nuevo trabajo en Su Viña? Quizas como una Virgen consagrada, una monja, un Monje, Un Diacono Permanente, Un Sacerdote, un Catequista, un Ministro de Eucaristia para las personas que no pueden salir de casa, un miembro del comite de ayuda, un Lector, Uno que da la bienvenida, un Sacristan, un acolito, un Ujier, un cantor en nuestro Coro de ninas Sta. Cecilia, una persona que ayuda a decorar la Iglesia, un miembro del comite que cuida el edificio, o un voluntario que ayude a rediseñar el sitema de comunicacion (telefonos, computadoras, pagina de internet) el salmista resume que la generosidad de nuestro Dios y su presencia continua en nuestras vidas a traves de Su amor eterno. Solo tenemos que hacer una cosa—pedirle a Dios su ayuda. “El Señor esta cerca de todos los que lo claman, y lo claman en verdad.” (Salmo 145:18)
Oremos: Dios Misericordioso, Generoso, y siempre presente Ayudanos a clamar a Ti y a entender que es lo que Tu quieres que hagamos en Tu Viña!
