Forty Days In The Desert With Wild Beasts and Angels

February 23, 2024Every first Sunday of Lent we hear about, “Jesus, immediately after his Baptism, was driven by the Spirit into the wilderness and remained in the wilderness for 40 days, tempted by Satan. He was among wild beasts and the angels ministered to him” (Mark 1:12- 13). I invite you to meditate on these two short verses. Your own reflection can inspire your entire Lenten journey.
IMAGINE that for the next 40 days you are in the middle of a desert!
First, the desert is a place where there is nothing to do but PRAY. God invites you to spend your 40 days of Lent first and foremost in PRAYER. Put yourself in the Presence of God and go to your inner self and pray to God silently so that you can hear his voice! There are very few distractions in a desert and you are far from your daily worries: an ideal place to find GOD!
Second, you have no choice in the desert but to FAST!
You are hungry, very hungry, but you can resist the hunger you feel deeply because you do not have access to any type of food. Many times we fail in our Lenten resolution to fast because we are surrounded by so much food and instead of fasting we can overeat – gluttony!Third, on the spiritual level, we are invited to fast from our habitual sins. Beasts like snakes represent the demons of our lives: the TEMPTATIONS TO SIN! How can we resist such temptations?
As Saint Mark indicates in the case of Jesus in the desert, THE ANGELS MINISTERED TO HIM! This is the good news that we too, like Jesus, can emerge victorious from the temptations of the devil. We all have guardian angels who will protect us from temptations.
This is the constant battle in our hearts: good over evil! And the good will be victorious. Let us not be afraid of the beasts that make us sin, let us simply pray to God to send us his angels to minister to us!Heavenly Father, continue sending us your angels to defeat the beasts, the demons that surround us!
Heavenly Father, help us to be saints this Lent!
Heavenly Father, help us to go to Confession this Lent and Reconcile with You and all our brothers and sisters!

CUARENTA DÍAS EN EL DESIERTO CON BESTIAS SALVAJES Y ÁNGELES
Cada primer domingo de Cuaresma escuchamos acerca de “Jesús, inmediatamente después de su bautismo, fue impulsado por el Espíritu al desierto y permaneció en el desierto durante 40 días, tentado por Satanás. Estaba entre fieras y los ángeles le ministraron” (Marcos 1:12-13). Los invito a meditar sobre estos dos versos cortos. Tu propia reflexión puede inspirar todo tu viaje cuaresmal.
IMAGINA que durante los próximos 40 días estás en medio de un desierto!
Primero, el desierto es un lugar donde no hay nada que hacer más que ORAR. Dios te invita a pasar tus 40 días de Cuaresma ante todo en ORACIÓN. Ponte en la Presencia de Dios y ve a tu yo interior y ora a Dios en silencio para que puedas escuchar su voz! Hay muy pocas distracciones en un desierto y estás lejos de tus preocupaciones diarias: ¡un lugar ideal para encontrar a DIOS!
En segundo lugar, ¡no tienes otra opción en el desierto que AYUNAR!
Tienes hambre, mucha hambre, pero puedes resistir el hambre que sientes profundamente porque no tienes acceso a ningún tipo de alimento. Muchas veces fallamos en nuestra resolución de Cuaresma de ayuno porque estamos rodeados de tanta comida y en lugar de ayunar podemos comer en exceso: ¡glotonería!Tercero, en el nivel espiritual, se nos invita a ayunar de nuestros pecados habituales. Las fieras como las serpientes representan los demonios de nuestra vida: ¡las TENTACIONES AL PECADO! ¿Cómo podemos resistir tales tentaciones?
Como indica San Marcos en el caso de Jesús en el desierto ¡LOS ÁNGELES LE SIRVIERON! Esta es la buena noticia de que nosotros también, como Jesús, podemos salir victoriosos de las tentaciones del diablo. Todos tenemos ángeles guardianes que nos protegerán de las tentaciones. Ésta es la batalla constante en nuestros corazones: ¡el bien sobre el mal! Y
los buenos saldrán victoriosos. ¡No tengamos miedo de las fieras que nos hacen pecar, simplemente oremos a Dios para que nos envíe sus ángeles para ministrarnos!¡Padre Celestial, sigue enviándonos tus ángeles para vencer a las fieras, los demonios que nos rodean!
Padre Celestial, ¡ayúdanos a ser santos en esta Cuaresma!
Padre Celestial, ayúdanos a ir a Confesión en esta Cuaresma y Reconciliarnos contigo y con todos nuestros hermanos y hermanas!
