Did you attend the amazing performance by our Youth last Sunday? It was filled with pure JOY! THE JOY OF OUR YOUTH WAS CONTAGIOUS! It was drizzling outside. But the sun kept shining in Father Martin Hall: in the hearts of the 20 or so actors and helpers, but also in the hearts of the spectators. It is impossible to describe what went on in the audience, on the stage and backstage. You had to be there to experiment this new Advent event preparing for the greatest Joy children and parents are waiting for: the coming of the baby Jesus at Christmas: God becoming man!
Advent is a time of expectation. Advent is a time of awaiting. Advent is a tome of fulfillment. An idea was born in France nine months ago: to create A PLAY ABOUT THE LIFE AND LEGACY OF FATHER MARTIN. No one could have then imagined how such an idea would materialize. Only God knew. He had a Plan! We wanted to celebrate the Centennial Year of the death of Father Martin (December 31, 1845 -August 6, 1923). What about creating a play about his life that could be performed as part of a FESTIVAL OF JOY? What about a simple play that could be performed by children?
As you know the Festival of Joy planned for the afternoon of August 6, 2023, had to be cancelled. But the decision was made: why not focus entirely the Festival of Joy on just the Father Martin play? When Cardinal Gregory agreed to visit our parish in December to close the Centennial Memorial Year, why not have the Cardinal stay after Mass and watch this new Play with all of us? The play was supposed to last 20 minutes: it took 45 minutes, and every minute was worth it. What was remarkable is that our Youth displayed an amazing Joy to perform it. They had begun rehearsals as early as last June. They remade the play with their enthusiasm in adding some personal touch. We will never forget the JOY OF YOUNG NARCISSE MARTIN WHEN BECOMING A PRIEST: raising his two arms in as sign of Victory and shouting: I WANT TO BECOME A PRIEST! We will never forget FATHER MARTIN RIDING HIS HORSE! It was a horse cut out in cardboard, but it became so real as Father Martin passed through the stage several times riding his horse and going out TO EVANGELIZE INTO THE HOMES!
There were many other moments of JOY that impressed the spectators. They were all helpful in making visual and oral highlights of WHO WAS FATHER MARTIN. In those packed 45 minutes one could discover who was that remarkable priest who made such an impact on the people of Waldorf, Baden and Aquasco 100 years ago. You may have enjoyed the annual performances of our Youth in Lent: The Living Station, a tradition at OLHOC, on the last Friday before the Paschal Triduum: always powerful and inspirational. Many parishioners never miss this Lenten event which is getting better and better! I hope last Sunday will begin a new tradition: an Advent Tradition that more and more people would want to attend year after year!
As we are celebrating the Third Sunday of Advent “Italics Gaudete”, which means REJOICE in Latin, we are lighting the third candle of the Advent Wreath, the rose one: THIS IS THE LIGHT OF JOY! CHRIST IS OUR LIGHT! May that Joyful Light of Christ shine in all our hearts as it happened in the play performed by our Youth last Sunday!
One in Christ,
Father Alain
