A New Beginning

February 14, 2025Our Retreat Master, Father Timothy Gallagher, ended his homily on the last day of our silent retreat for priests with a message of HOPE: “Today is not the end of a spiritual retreat. Today is A NEW BEGINNING for each of you in this Jubilee Year of Hope.”
He then specifically referred to Pope Francis’ first audience with Pilgrims of Hope in Rome on January 11. Back in Waldorf last week the first thing I did was to search for Pope Francis’ remarks. Here are some extracts:
“Dear brothers and sisters, good morning! Many of you are here in Rome as “pilgrims of hope”. This morning, we are starting the Saturday Jubilee audiences, which will ideally welcome and embrace all these who are coming from all over the world in search of a new beginning. Indeed, the Jubilee is a new beginning, the possibility for everyone to start anew from God. With the Jubilee we start a new life, a new phase...
Hope is a theological virtue. In Latin, virtus means strength. It is a strength that comes from God. Hope is not a habit or a character trait- that you either have or you don’t - but a strength to be asked for. That is why we make ourselves pilgrims. We come to ask for a gift, to start again on life’s journey...Just as we today pass through the Holy Door...so Joshua had crossed the River Jordan to enter the Promised Land...Jesus shows us the new path, the path of the Beatitudes, which are the surprising Law of the Gospel... Here is the new beginning, our Jubilee.”I invite you to reflect about the above message from our Holy Father. He is speaking to all of us. We are all called to be pilgrims of hope this Jubilee Year 2025. Our spiritual pilgrimage can take place right here in Waldorf. The question for each one of us is: do I desire in my heart a new beginning, a new relationship with our Lord Jesus Christ?
At Mass this Sunday you will hear more about the new path that Jesus gives us in the Sermon on the Plain: the Beatitudes (Luke 6:17,20-26)! It is a challenging, radical, counter-cultural path: “Blessed are you who are poor, for the Kingdom of God is yours...but woe to you who are rich for you have received your consolation”. We should keep our eyes fixed toward Jesus and not toward the world. Jesus is our only Hope! He dies on the Cross to take away our sins. He gives His life to save us. He then rises from the dead defeating death once for all and giving us Eternal Life! He is the Door to Heaven. He is the New Path. He is the Jubilee, the fulfillment of all God’s promises.
“Blessed is the one who trusts in the Lord, whose hope is the Lord” (Jeremiah 17:7)

EMPEZAR DE NUEVO!Nuestro maestro de Retiro, Padre T imothy Gallagher, finalizó su homilía el último día del retiro en silencio para sacerdotes con un mensaje de ESPERANZA: “Hoy no es el fin de nuestro retiro espiritual. Hoy EMPEZAMOS DE NUEVO cada uno de nosotros en este Año Jubilar de la Esperanza.”
Se refirió específicamente a la primera audiencia del Papa Francisco con los Peregrinos de la Esperanza en Roma el 11 de enero. Al volver a Waldorf la semana pasada lo primero que hice fue investigar por lo más importante que dijo el Papa Francisco. Aqui les muestro algunas citas importantes:
“Queridos hermanos y hermanas, buenos días! Muchos de ustedes están aquí en Roma como “peregrinos de esperanza”. Esta mañana, estamos empezando las audiencias de Sábados Jubilares, las cuales idealmente le dan la bienvenida y abrazan a todos los que vienen de todas partes del mundo en búsqueda de un nuevo principio. Si, el Jubileo es un nuevo principio, la posi- bilidad para todos de empezar de nuevo con Dios. Con el Jubileo empezamos una vida nueva, una nueva etapa...
La Esperanza en una virtud teologal. En Latin, virtud significa fuerza. Es una fuerza que viene de Dios. La Esperanza no es un hábito o parte del carácter que uno pueda tener o no, sino que una fuerza que pedimos. Es por eso que somos peregrinos. Venimos a pedir un regalo, empezar de nuevo este camino en la vida...Así como hoy atravesamos la Puerta Santa...así también Josue cruzó el Río Jordán y entró a la Tierra Prometida... Jesús nos muestra un nuevo camino, el camino a las Bienaventuranzas, las cuales son las sorprendentes leyes del Evangelio...Aquí está el nuevo principio, nuestro Jubileo.”Los invito a reflexionar acerca del mensaje del Santo Padre. Nos habla a todos. Somos llamados a ser peregrinos de esperanza en este Año Jubilar 2025. Nuestro peregrinaje espiritual tendrá lugar aquí mismo en Waldorf. La pregunta para cada uno de ustedes es: deseo realmente en mi corazón un nuevo principio, una nueva relación con nuestro Señor Jesucristo?
En la Misa de este domingo escucharemos más acerca de este camino que Jesus nos da en el Sermón de la Montaña, las Bienaventuranzas (Lucas 6:17,17.20-26)! Es un reto, radical,un camino contracultural: ”Bienaventurados ustedes los pobres, porque suyo es el Reino de Dios...pero hay de ustedes los ricos porque ya han recibido su recompensa". Debemos mantener nuestros ojos fijos en Jesús y no en el mundo. Jesus es nuestra única Esperanza! Murió en la Cruz y nos libró de nuestros pecados. Entregó su vida para salvarnos. Para resucitar y vencer a la muerte de una vez por todos y darnos Vida Eterna! El es la Puerta al Cielo. El Nuevo Camino. El es el Jubileo, el cumplimiento de todas las promesas de Dios.
“Bienaventurados los que confían en el Señor, y que en Él tienen su Esperanza.” (Jeremías 17:7).
